The Sydney Gazette and… Saturday 5 June 1813,
The following remarkable instance of sagacity in the canine species was a short time since witnessed at Prospect Hill ; where a stranger, followed by a dog, went into a house to rest from the fatigue of travelling ; and after a short stay, was alarmed by the exclamations of his hostess, Oh! my child- my child! The poor woman had an infant 15 months old, and the little creature having wandered out of sight, a well, close to the back door, which was imprudently kept without a cover, instantaneously darted into her recollection :- It was thirty feet in depth, and half full of Water. Thither she flew to witness a spectacle strange as it was distressing- the helpless infant in the well, and the dog supporting its head above the water The animal had perceived its fall, and instantly plunged to its relief; which happily proved effectual !
